Problem in Installing Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express - Community Technology Prev
Hi,
I installed SQL Server Express Edition and trying to install Management Studio Express but not successful.
Following Error is thrown while installing MSSMSE.
"The Installation Package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package"
I downloaded the software from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=82AFBD59-57A4-455E-A2D6-1D4C98D40F6E&displaylang=en
Please help me. I am struck.

This sounds like a problem with the download. Try turning off anti-virus protection when you do the download. Also, make sure you save the download to a drive that is not near capacity.
Problem in inserting value in view
Hi There,
i have created one view on an exsisting table, but when i am inserting value in it, it is giving the following error msg:
Derived table 'View Name' is not updatable because a column of the derived table is derived or constant.
Thanx
Is this related to SSIS? Well the error is coming straight from SQL Server itself, and is fairly clear to me.
You cannot update a column that is not really a column. So what columns are being updated and can you honestly say they are unadulterated columns, and have not been derived or manipulated in any way before being returned from the view.?
If you want a specific answer then post the UPDATE statement and a the DDL (CREATE VIEW...) for the view.
problem in inserting a record whose values are of date and time format.

can anyone help me to figure out the problem
Thanks a lot in advance.

problem in executing extended stored procedure
When i am trying to execute extended stored procedure im getting
error as:
Msg 22048, Level 15, State 0, Line 0
Error executing extended stored procedure: Invalid Parameter
Can u guys help me outHi,
Tell us exactly which command and parameters are you using.
By the way, have you checked BOL (if applies) for the parameters that you
need to specify?
Hope this helps,

Hi,
Question is something like this:
In procedure create folder for each database and backup of the
database should get saved in that folder.
For e.g : If your database name is 'Test' then in procedure create
folder 'test' and store backup of test database in test folder. Then
for database 'AdventureWorks' create folder called 'AdventureWorks'
and store backup in that folder.
For this i am using command as Execute xp_create_subdir and parameter
as @.pathDir. Actually i am new to SQL SERVER 2005.It will be a great
help if u could tell.|||Not sure about what exactly your problem is but something like this works
declare @.pathDir nvarchar(80)
set @.pathDir = 'c:\YourDB'
execute master.dbo.xp_create_subdir @.pathDir
By the way, xp_create_subdir is used on the Maintenance Plans but it looks
like it is not documented on BOL.
Hope this helps,

Hi,
Thanks buddy.
Problem in emailing to operator in SQLAgent
I got the following error when I tested emailing to the operator in Sql
Server Agent.
"Error 22022 : SQLServerAgent Error. The SQLServerAgent mail session is
not running; check the mail profile and/or the SQLServerAgent service
startup account in the SQLServerAgent properties dialog."
However, if I stopped and then started the SQL Server Agent again, I can
send email to the operator successfully. The problem happened again when the
server is restarted.
Here are some checks on my server.
- Running SQL2000 (SP4) on SBS2003. Outlook client 2003.
- Mail profile is using Exchange 2003, not POP3
- Mail Profile test in Sql Server Agent is alway OK even though I cannot
send email to operator.
- SQL Server Agent service startup account = SQL server service startup
account = mail profile mail box AD account
- SQL server agent is set to start automatically with Sql Server
Any idea for solving this problem?
Edwin
Hi Edwin,
Welcome to use MSDN Managed Newsgroup!
From your descriptions, I understood your SQL Agent won't launch smoothly
until you have restarted it. If I have misunderstood your concern, please
feel free to point it out.
First of all, please make sure SQL Server and SQL Agent services are
starting with same domain accounts. Does the domain account has
Administrator privilege?
Secondly, it is really strange that the restart of service will fix this
scenario. Would you pelase check the Event Log to see if there is any more
related information?

Michael Cheng

|||Hi Michael
SQL Agent did launch successfully. Scheduled job can run. Testing of mail
profile is OK. Even xp_sendmail can work in query analyzer. The only
problem is cannot email to operator from SQLAgent when needed (such as a job
failed).
As said, SQL Server service startup a/c = SQLAgent service startup a/c = the
AD a/c used to setup the mail profile on the server. The AD a/c is member of
domain administrators group.
No warning or error events are found regarding MSSQLSERVER and
MSSQLSERVERAGENT event source.
This is not an occasional event. It happened in my old SBS2000. After I
migrated it to SBS2003, the problem is still there. Of course the two
servers are using similar settings and so I think some settings cause the
problem.
Any ideas?

This is a really strange issue that you will have to the restart of SQL

Since the machine was restarted, the SQL Agent was also restarted. I am not
sure why it need twice restart.
Would you please perform the steps below and let me know the result?
When the machine was restarted execute the following statements directly in
the
EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_sqlagent_notify 'N', NULL, NULL, NULL, 'E',
N'edwinchan@.nospam.nospam'
--Make sure to replace edwinchan@.nospam.nospam
--with a valid test email destination address
Whether it will send the email as expected?
After this, execute the same statement after the SQL Agent was restarted
twice.

They occured about 20 seconds apart. Not sure whether this is normal or not.
It seems to me that it is about timing when the SQLServerAgent service is
started. It is just not started at the right time. Will it matter if
SQLServerAgent service is started when Exchange is not completely started?
I have not started SQLServerAgent service yet. What else would you like to
test?

You have installed the Exchange Server on the same machine?
If the Exchange Server is started behind SQL Server Agent's start, the mail
profiler may not get the correct information.

|||Hi Michael
As said, my server is running SBS2003 and it is assumed to have Exchange2003
and SQL server 2000 running in the same machine. I think all of the SBS
users are doing that way; otherwise why buy SBS? If the problem is caused
by having Exchange and SQL server running in the same machine, it is
obviously a design fault of the product. Is there any work around from
Microsoft? How can I restart SQLAgent Service automatically after each

Thanks for the update.
Would you pleaes let me know how to do you create the Mail Profile?
First of all, please understand we do not support installing Exchange
Server with Outlook together.
Microsoft does not support installing Exchange Server components and
Outlook on the same computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=266418
However, you could configure your SQL Mail as described below
How to create MAPI profiles without installing Outlook
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306962/en-us
Secondly, you may add dependency to Exchange Services for SQLAgent Services
or SQL Server Services.
-1- Start -> Run -> services.msc
-2- Find all the service name for each Exchange Servicew
(For example, the service name for Microsoft Exchange POP3 is POP3Svc, you
could see this when you check the properties for each service)
-3- Start -> Run -> Regedit
-4- Open Key DependOnService under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\SQLSERVERAGENT
-5- Input all Services from Step -2- to DependOnService
-6- Restart the machine to see whether it works
Thank you for your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. We are always here to be of
assistance!

|||Hi Michael
Yes, Outlook was installed in the server. I have read the article 306962
but found it is not quite user friendly to follow through. First of all I
cannot find NewProf.exe in the Outlook 2003 CD came with my SBS. I looked
into ProfMan2.exe but it just mentioned Outlook 2000 compliant and so I am
not sure it can be used in Exchange 2003 or not. The other approaches looked
quite unfamilar to me because it required to write some programs to do the
job. I hope MS can suggest a more user friendly way to create a mail profile
in Exchange 2003.
Anyway, making the SQLSERVERAGENT service dependent on MSExchangeIS service
solved my problem. Hence it seems it was caused by having SQLSERVERAGENT
started too early.

EdwinHi Edwin,
Welcome to use MSDN Managed Newsgroup!

=====================================================This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.|||Hi Michael
Of course the two
servers are using similar settings and so I think some settings cause the
problem.
Any ideas?

1. Stop MSSQLServer and SQLServerAgent services.

yes I did, though it is SQL Server 2000. Then I started in sqlservr -c
-f -T3608 mode cause the master db comes from a different system
environment and I have to change some system entries in sysaltfiles and
detach some databases.
I tried this before in Windows Server 2003 environment and now I try to
do it in Windows Server 2000 environment.

Problem in checking null record
Hello,
I am using sql server 2000 as my backend.
If there is any null record in my table , I am getting following error:
***********
Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'String' is not valid.
**************
to overcome this error I want to check if its null then don't do anything else do something.
I have tried like this:
If rs.fields("ph").value="NULL" then
else
.......
....
...
end if
But this does not solve my problem.
Please help me i anyone can.
Thanks.
If rs.fields("ph") Is DbNull.Value Then
'it's null
Else
'it can be converted to a string
End If
Your solution test to see if the field = "NULL". Because you have NULL in quotes, you are actually testing to see if the field holds a string wiht the letters N U L L in it. The other thing about NULL is that nothing can equal null. Null means "unknown value", so it is impossible to compare one unknown value with another, because, well, they are unknown... The test for null is IsNull.
Problem importing Excel data into SSMS
Hi,
When I try to use the Import and Export Wizard to import a good .xls file I keep getting this error:

The OS is XP, w/ office 2003.
here are the full error details:

http://databases.aspfaq.com/database/how-do-i-solve-could-not-find-installable-isam-errors.html for all the issues to resolve.|||Thanks Satya,
This link is dead. I had previously found this resource and chased down the Google cached version
http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:Vyh8_PKhHrwJ:databases.aspfaq.com/database/how-do-i-solve-could-not-find-installable-isam-errors.html+how-do-i-solve-could-not-find-installable-isam-errors.html&hl=en&lr=&strip=1
All it says is to reinstall the MDAC. Well, when I try to do that the system (XP) says there is no need for it as a more recent version is included as part of the OS.
This article describes registry changes to the Jet engine.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/283881
This machine's registry does not have these keys at all, even though both Excel 2k3 and Access 2k3 work just fine. The fix is to reinstall or repair the Office Pro installation.
I have poor experiences with reinstalling Office 2003. Many customized settings are kept in the registry and wiped out in the reinstall/repair. Before I embark on this journey I don't understand why I even need Office for the operation I am trying to do?
BTW the same error occurred when I tried to import a csv file too, not just an .xls
I wrote a little c# class to convert the file to xml and then standard DAL to "import" the data into SQL Server db. Worked like a charm, but in the future I would still like to be able to do it in SSMS. Most likely on a remote server there would not even be any installation of Office.
Thanks again
Carl
|||See this blog entry too http://blogs.wdevs.com/Gaurang/archive/2005/06/15/5112.aspx and I appreciate your feedback.|||
Satya,
great tip here http://blogs.wdevs.com/Gaurang/archive/2005/06/15/5112.aspx
They talk about extended properties in a connection string.
If I were not doing the connection programmatically but using the SSMS Object explorer, where should I find the connection for the (local) server instance?
Databases -> MyDatabase ->Security ->Users ->dbo
Here there is a link in the lower left to view the connection properties but no extended properties field.
The only place I could find such a field is in
Databases -> System Databases -> master ->Security ->Users -> SERVERNAME\SQLServer2005MSFTEUser$SERVERNAME$MSSQLSERVER
That however is not the db I want to import to. I added an extended property anyway "Excel 8.0;IMEX=1" just for kicks but it didn't do any good.
Any more ideas?
Carl
|||You can use SP_ADDEXTENDEDPROPERTY as per this http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190243.aspx link.
|||My question was not how to do it programmatically but how to do it using the SSMS GUIs.
I guess the pros do not like using the GUIs too much, and I am starting to see why.
Thanks

According to the Access help a memo field can store up to
65000 + character.
The nvarchar(2000) can store up to 1000 characters (look
up unicode in BOL). Try changing the SQL Server datatype

Problem generating error file using BULK INSERT or BCP thru xp_cmdshell.
BCP thru xp_cmdshell from stored procedure:
EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1;
RECONFIGURE
EXEC sp_configure 'xp_cmdshell', 1;
RECONFIGURE
EXEC xp_cmdshell 'bcp database.dbo.table in c:\scheduled.csv -S SERVER\SQLEXPRESS -T -t, -r\n -c -e "error.txt"';
This is returning the following error code. I even tried placing the command in a seperate command file and calling that with no success. If I run this from the command line the error file generation does work.
=================================================================
SQLState = HY000, NativeError = 0
Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Unable to open BCP error-file
=================================================================
Error message when using BULK INSERT as follows:
BULK INSERT database.dbo.table from 'c:\unscheduled.csv' with
(FIELDTERMINATOR = ',', ERRORFILE = 'c:\error.txt');
Returns the following error message:
=================================================================
Msg 4861, Level 16, State 1, Procedure pro_cedure, Line 9
Cannot bulk load because the file "c:\error.txt" could not be opened. Operating system error code 80(The file exists.).
Msg 4861, Level 16, State 1, Procedure pro_cedure, Line 9
Cannot bulk load because the file "c:\error.txt.Error.Txt" could not be opened. Operating system error code 80(The file exists.).
=================================================================
The Bulk Insert actually creates a empty error.txt file (0kb) and never preforms the insert, I can not find any examples of anyone using the -ERRORFILE switch on BULK INSERT. Prolly some default security setting to allow file creation/modification I am missing. Anyone help me out? Thanks.
EDIT: SQL SERVER EXPRESS 2005 - WINXP PRO SP2
bcp or bulk insert will not overwrite or append to the error file. If you get an error the first time, and want to rerun your command, you need to either delete these files, or specify a new location for the error file.
|||Unfourtunetly I am deleting the file, I'm still doing so by hand in testing.
On bcp thru xp_cmdshell it does not generate an errorfile at all (this actually works just fine from the command line just not thru a stored procedure), with bulk insert it generates a error file which is completely blank (even tho I know there is 6 rows that cannot be imported) of size 0kb, so totally empty. Also it does not actually execute the insert.
Most likely it is a security setting. I can not find it however. Another possiblity is maybe I disabled a required service.
Anyways, thanks for the reply.
Running SQL Express 2005 on WINXP PRO SP2.
|||Does the service account which SQL Server is running under have write permissions to the disk?
According to the bulk insert error message, it does (your message says the file exists), but you say in the next post you're deleting it?
|||Ah your the bomb.
SQLExpress service was running under network authority not local system account. I switched it to local system and now the bulk import with errorfile switch is working from sqlcmd. Write permissions or something, anyways I know where to look now, thanks!

problem exporting views
I get the error:
Invalid object name 'dbo.myview'
The weird thing is that this view allready exists in the destination dbase.
Any help appreciated.

Run the following query in your user database. What are the results?
select t1.name, t2.name
from sysobjects t1, sysusers t2
where t1.name = 'myview' and t1.uid = t2.uid
--
Regards
JTC ^..^|||Sorry to ask, but how can I do this?
I tried the SQL query analyser and inserted:
select t1.name, t2.name
from sysobjects t1, sysusers t2
where t1.name = [mydatabase].[dbo].[tbl_customers] and t1.uid = t2.uid
but get this message:
Server: Msg 107, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
The column prefix 'mydatabase.dbo' does not match with a table name or alias
name used in the query
thx a lot

of your view.

Like this...
select t1.name, t2.name
from sysobjects t1, sysusers t2
where t1.name = 'tbl_customers' and t1.uid = t2.uid
The idea is that the query will returns all tables named tbl_customers
along with the table owners. Please Copy and Paste the results.

JTC ^..^|||Go back to the proposed query, and fix below things:
Do not remove the quotes around the name of the view in the WHERE clause. Do not fully qualify the
object name in the where clause.
