Problem in Installing SQL Server Management Studio

Hi all, i have already installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional Addition, due to which the following components have been installed on my computer

Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 1.0 SP3 Developer

Microsoft Compact Framework 2.0

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

Microsoft Device Emulator version 1.0-ENU

Microsoft Document Explorer 2005

Microsoft SQL Server 2005

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Mobile [ENU] Developers Tools

Microsoft SQL Server Native Client

Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files

Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer

Microsoft Visual J# 2.0 Redistributable Package

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition - ENU

MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005

MSXML 6.0 Parser

My visual studio 2005 professional edition is working correctly, but now i want to install Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. I have a CD on which i have following folders

1.SQL Kit and Reporting Services(this folder contains folowing setups,

SQLServer2005_SSMSEE,

SQLEXPR_ADV,

SQLEXPR_TOOLKit)

2.Database Publising Wizard 1.0 RC(this folder contains a setup named as Database Publising Wizard 1.0 RC)

3.Book folder contains a setup named as SqlServer2k5_BOL_june2006

My problem is that, i don't know in which sequence i have to run these setups, so that the management studio successfully insatlled on my computer. If anybody understands my problem, plz help.

It looks like you have SQL 2005 Express Edition. To install the Express version of SSMS, run the setup or installer in SQLServer2005_SSMSEE .

Problem encountered during the installation of Visual Studio .NET 2005 Professional on a windows

I'd tried to install Visual Studio .NET 2005 Professional Edition on a Windows 2000 domain PC, and everything was fine except the last step (i.e. installing SQL Express). I got the error message "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition x86: [2] Component Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition x86 returned an unexpected value. ***EndOfSession***". Further investigation on the error in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG" and found that "Product : SQL Server Database Services Error : SQL Server Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. The error was [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Cannot alter the login 'sa', because it does not exist or you do not have permission.. Refer to the server error logs and Setup logs for detailed error information." I used a domain account with local administrator privilege to install. I doubt whether my domain policy affect the installation. Could someone tell me what security policy I should set to allow the installation of the Visual Studio .NET 2005 Professional on a domain PC.

We'd tried (Put the domain account into the local Users group as well) but still failed. As a domain account, how can we list it first in the local administrators group? PS. The domain account is already belonging to the local administrators group.

Hi ALL,

The domain PC is Windows XP Prof. with SP2 _ latest patches installed. The installation is run by a domain account which has local administrator privilege on the domain PC.

I looked through our bugs and came up with something.

Looks like if SQL Server 2005 RTM is installed in a Domain where a windows Group named 'sa', 'SA', 'Sa' or 'sA' exists, installation fails when Integrated Security is chosen. However, despite having the Windows group in the Domain, installation with Mixed Security work fine. After having installed successfully with Mixed Secuirty, the server properties can be changed to accept Integrated Security connections only. This should work.

Do you know if there are installation options in the Visual Studio .NET 2005 to specify the security mode for SQL Server 2005 RTM. If no, we need to separate out the SQL 2005 Express Edition from the Visual Studio .NET 2005 and install the SQL 2005 Express Edition individually.

|||No, there isn't an instgall option to specify the security mode separately. You should know, though, that with integrated security, the SA account is disabled.

Problem connecting using Windows XP Professional

Greetings,

I installed SQL Express 2005 on my machine with XP Professional. My machine name is ROBERT and my user name is Rob. I did not get asked during the installation to supply an administrator password.

Following the installation when I try to connect using a C# app and setting IntegratedSecurity to true I get told that ROBERT\Rob is not authorised to connect to the database (paraphrased as I do not have the exact error message with me).

How do I go about adding my user name to the database if I do not know what the "sa" password is ?

Hi Robert...you are having trouble with your Windows user most likely because you are not a valid user on the server as of yet...by default, the only valid users on the server are members of the BUILTIN\Administrators group and the SQL service account(s) and the sa (if appropriate).

If you don't know the sa password, you'll have to get somebody who is either a member of the Administrators group or who knows the SQL service account password(s) to login and add your windows user as a valid server login and provide the appropriate permissions to the appropriate database(s).

Look for the following commands in SQL Books Online for more help there:

CREATE LOGIN...

CREATE USER...
